The Class:
In the past few years everything I thought I knew has changed except for one thing: Home is my place of security, my "rock" so to speak. In this mixed media class we will use any and all materials available to us to create symbols for meaningful or just fun aspects of our lives in our projects. I will bring at least 24 of my Rock Squares series, where I used anything from rocks, jewelry, pine cones, antique patchwork, knitted items, buttons, keys, whatever I had available. We will revisit techniques and explore whatever expands our ideas of what can be done!
I welcome you all to bring pieces you've already started and want to embellish, or begin a new journey with odds and ends! We can do everything from hooking to coiling and shirring with fabrics, yarns and ribbons not usually seen in rug hooking. Let's see what we have and what can be put together. Combining unexpected things can be liberating, empowering and fun!
Teacher Bio:
Tracy has had over 30 years experience as a restorer and conservator working primarily with American antique textiles. Moving to New York City from Minnesota in 1979 she became head of textile restoration for the America Hurrah Gallery, opening her own restoration studio in 1985.
In 2006 she returned to college to complete an undergraduate degree, graduating in 2009 from Goddard College in Plainfield, VT. After which she committed her time to creating contemporary fiber works. She explores hand-made sewing and rug hooking techniques and is inspired by traditional, folk and contemporary art and uses a combination of new, old, repurposed and non-traditional materials.
In 2012 she collaborated on a book, American Sew Rugs: Their History with Exceptional Examples with antique textile dealer Jan Whitlock. This led to writing a book using those traditional techniques in 2017, Coil, Folds, Twists and Turns: Contemporary Techniques in Fiber.
She has taught at Sauder Village 2013, 2016; Green Mt Rug School 2018 as well as other locations and was keynote speaker for the ATHA Biennial in Denver 2019. Her works have won awards through the years.
