Green Mountain Rug School
The health and safety of our teachers and students is our highest priority.
As of right now, we are still planning to hold Rug School in June.
We continue to monitor the spread of the virus and will update attendees immediately should any change be made.

With more than thirty-five years of experience teaching students at all levels, Green Mountain Rug School offers traditional and contemporary rug-hooking classes annually, in June, in the heart of downtown Montpelier, Vermont at the Capitol Plaza Hotel. Classes range from wide-cut, primitive, and folk art to fine-cut, shading, pictorials, dyeing, and beginner's-level instruction. Teachers hail from all over the United States and Canada. A well-stocked rug supply shop is open daily.
Over the years, Green Mountain Rug School has cultivated an atmosphere that makes us special. We encourage a sense of community and fellowship with a spirit toward providing each student the room to expand their knowledge of rug hooking at their own pace. Here are some of things that we think make Green Mountain great:
- We are one of the oldest Rug Hooking schools. Founded in 1982 by Anne Ashworth and Jean Armstrong, we have been around for almost 40 years! With 6 teachers and 100 students over 4 days! When you attend, you will be fully emerged in Rug Hooking and fiber, surrounded by your peers who are also learning great things about rug hooking.
- We are a 5th generation family business. The fifth generation (Cecely, Lindsay and Mariah) was born hook-in-hand, we grew up in this business and we care deeply about it. The 4th generation (Stephanie and Pam) is still involved spending their time teaching and guiding the younger generation.
- No kits. We encourage our teachers to teach you skills on your own project. We want our students to bring their own projects and learn techniques on a piece that they are invested in.
- The Gallery Walk - an opportunity to see what others are working on. One night during your session we reserve 2 hours for the students to see what the other classes are working on and to meet the other teachers to see what they are teaching.

“With such busy lives, it is nice to know there is such a wonderful place to get away from it all”. Capitol Plaza has such a warm relaxing atmosphere and our night was just what we needed”
Adjacent to the hotel is the on-site restaurant J. Morgan's Steak House. The Steakhouse has been serving award winning steaks, seafood and Sunday brunch to locals and overnight travelers for years. All within an appealing atmosphere that has been described as 'city steakhouse, eclectic, and even eye candy.' Recently, J. Morgan's was awarded the 2018 Restaurateur of the Year!
The Capitol Plaza Hotel & Conference Center
All of the class rooms are located in the hotel and are accessible by two elevators in the hotel. The spaces range from 12-15 student capacities and you will have padded chairs and table space for your supplies. Though the classrooms all have access to natural light, some are brighter than others and therefore, we recommend you plan to bring an additional light source if that is important to you. For those that are flying, there is an opportunity to borrow a light.
For those of you who choose to take the dye class you will be located in a separate space, not in the hotel, located on 2838 County Road in Montpelier, Vermont. This location is home to our retail store through the year and is more conducive to the dye class then the hotel. Each student will have their own workstation complete with an induction hot plate and two hotel pans. This allows students the ability to learn to dye using tools similar to the ones they would use at home. Lunch is delivered to the dye class daily so that you do not have to travel back to the hotel, however, you are more then welcome to travel back if you prefer. Transportation to this location from the hotel can be arranged.
Green Mountain Rug School is located off of Exit 8 on I-89. There are 6 area airports you can use. If you decide to fly into Burlington we can typically help with ground transportation to the hotel. If you decide to fly into one of the other 5 airports, you will need to rent a car and drive. Remember - we don't cancel classes due to low enrollment, so you can book your flight and rest assured your class won't be canceled!
